ICT - Module 1 - Basic Internet

The first module of the BCA for ICT is primarily based on the creation of simple websites.  The module involves the building and uploading of a number of simple 'html' websites.  Stress is placed upon the techniques, and rules, for making sites that work correctly, rather than upon the look and feel of the sites, and at this early stage, the actual content of the pages.

The module also involves a discussion of safe and proper internet use, leading to the completion of the school's Acceptable Use Policy.

At the conclusion of the module, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand the differences between browsing, editing and uploading web pages
  • Create a web folder, containing web pages with hyperlinks to each other
  • Add suitably sized graphics to their websites, sourced from both the internet and network drives
  • Upload their sites using FTP
  • Understand how to use the internet safely and the requirements and sanctions as laid out in the school's AUP

Pupils will use the following pieces of software;

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2003
  • FTP Explorer
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

Lesson Outlines

The module is based on twelve 35 minute lessons.

The first four lessons are based around the creation of an 'animal website'.  Click here to see an example of this.

Lesson 1

Introduction to the module.  Discussion of purpose of FrontPage, Internet Explorer and FTP Explorer. Creation of web folder called 'Animal Website'.  Click here for a guide to creating a web folder.

Lesson 2

Recap of creating web folder. Creation of number of pages, each based on an animal.  Correct naming and saving of these.  Clear instruction about rules for naming web pages (and graphics), locations for saving, the need for regular saving and closing of pages.  Inserting hyperlinks.  Reviewing pages in Internet Explorer.

Lesson 3

The home page.  Creation of further pages, with links to and from homepage.  Introduction to FTP Explorer and correct settings for FTP to school site.  Click here to see the relevant settings for FTP Explorer.  Uploading of pages to school web servers.

Lesson 4

Need for all graphics to be in the images folder.  Rules for naming graphics.  Saving graphics from the Internet.  Insertion of graphics into web pages.  Uploading of pages to school web servers.

Lesson 5

Reinforcement and practice of all skills relating to website creation.

The next two lessons are based around the creation of a 'countries website', using graphics from a network drive and the Internet.  Click here to see an example of a site.

Lesson 6

Creation of new web folder.  Editing of home page and creation of a number of pages, each containing brief content about the country.  Copying of graphics from network location to images folder.  Saving of graphics from Internet.  Insertion of graphics.  Uploading of pages to school web servers.  (This will overwrite animals home page.  Pupils may wish to create a folder structure in their web space to prevent this.)

Lesson 7

Continuation of countries websites.  Introduction to concept of an 'image map'.  Uploading of pages to school web servers. (This will overwrite animals home page.  Pupils may wish to create a folder structure in their web space to prevent this.)

Formal Assessment.  The subject of the website will be given at the beginning of the lesson.  However, to see an example of the type of website expected, click here.

Lesson 8

Pupils will be expected to create a small website containing a handful of pages.  These pages will be expected to contain some images and a small amount of text.  Pupils will be expected to follow all previous guidance on filenames for pages and images.  Pupils will also be expected to demonstrate how to upload their sites via FTP.

The final three lessons of the module involve pupils creating individual websites from a somewhat restrictive list of possible subjects.  Click here to see the list and some examples of the these.

Lesson 9

Pupils will be briefed on the list of possible subjects and explanation will be given as to the reasoning behind the contents of the list.  Pupils will then be expected to create a small website on the topic of their choice.  Each page will be expected to show some original content, although content copied from other sites (with acknowledgements) will also be permitted.  The sites should also contain a variety of graphics.  Once content is established, pupils will be encouraged to experiment with formatting and the use of tables.

Lesson 10

Continuation of individual websites and uploading of these via FTP.

Lesson 11

Completion of individual websites and uploading of these via FTP.

Lesson 12

Discussion of the Acceptable Use Policy.  (The date of this lesson during the term is flexible.)  Click here for key teaching points.

Assessment

Individual Lesson Performance (22 marks)

A pupil will be scored on their performance in each lesson and will receive a score of 0, 1 or 2.

  • 2 marks: The pupil has made a positive contribution to the lesson, listened to instructions, and demonstrated an understanding of the new skills introduced.  (It is expected that the vast majority of pupils will score a '2' each lesson.
  • 1 mark: The pupil has made a limited contribution to the lesson, or has failed to listen to instructions, or has shown a lack of understanding of the skills introduced.
  • 0 marks:  The pupil has had a negative effect on the lesson, disrupting the learning of others.

NB:  The individual lesson performance score will not apply during the formal assessment (Lesson 7).  Absent pupils will receive a mark based on their average score over the other lessons.

Formal Assessment (14 marks)

Maximum score of 14 is achieved in the formal assessment by creating a website in which:

  • A new web folder is created.
  • All filenames follow the guidance given.
  • All hyperlinks work correctly.
  • Each page (apart from the home page) contains a relevant graphic and some text
  • Each page has a link to the home page.
  • All pages have been uploaded via FTP.
