Use of Win AVI

The instructions below outline how to transfer video files from the JVC camcorder into a netowrk folder and, at the same time, convert the video format from a .MOD format to a .WMV format, which can be used in Windows Movie Maker.

1.  Switch the camcorder to playback mode and connect it to the PC using a mini-USB cable.  The view screen on the camera will display the message USB ?????? (this needs editing).  After a few seconds, a window will appear as shown below.  This window is not necessary, so click on 'Cancel'.

2. Click on the Windows Start Button, and navigate through Programs -. Video Editing, and select WinAVI key.

3.  Notepad will load and display a long line of letters and numbers, which is the Win AVI key.  Click on edit - select all to select all the text.  (Alternatively, drag over the phrase).  Then right-click and choose 'copy'.

4. Click on the Windows Start Button, and navigate through Programs -. Video Editing, and select Win AVI.

5.  If you have not used Win AVI on the PC before the following registration box will appear.  In the name box, you should type The Beacon School.  You should then right click in the code box and paste the key.  Then click register and OK.  (If you do not receive a warning message, move on to step 7.

9. The first step is to find the video files on the camcorder.  Click on the 'Look in' box at the top of the window and choose 'EVERIO_HDD (D:).

10.  Double-click on the 'SD_VIDEO' folder.

11. Double-click on the 'PRG001' folder.

12.  This folder will appear to be empty. IMPORTANT: It is not empty, but you need to choose to view all file types.  Go to files of type at the bottom of the window and select 'any file (*.*)

13.  There may be a number of files in the window.  Clicking on the icon shown below and selecting 'Details' allows you to see when each video file was created to help ensure that the correct files are selected.

14.  Look at the image below.  There are 13 files.  6 of them are 1KB 'MOI' files.  1 of them is a 1KB 'PGI' file.  These are not the files you need.  You are only interested in the 'mpeg' files that are considerably larger.  By checking the date modified column, select the file you wish to convert and then click 'Open'.

15.  You will now see a window similar to the one below.  Important: You now need to choose the Output Directory by clicking on 'Browse'.

16.  A Browse for Folder window will appear.  Scroll to the top of the window and click on the plus sign by 'My Documents'

17. Choose the folder, in this case 'My Videos' where you wish to save your converted file, then click on 'OK'.

18.  WinAVI will no convert your video file and save it in the specified location.  On completion, an 'All tasks have been completed!' message will appear .

19.  Beware, if you wish to convert more than one file at once, and choose to make multiple selections using ctrl-clicks (at step 14), then you should make sure to choose 'Output separate file (as shown below).
